Background of the Study:
Insecurity, particularly in the form of insurgencies, banditry, and communal violence, has become a major challenge in Nigeria, undermining various human rights, including the right to education. In regions like Kaduna State, where the escalation of violent conflicts has significantly affected local communities, education has been severely disrupted. Chikun Local Government, which is part of the urban area of Kaduna, has witnessed frequent attacks from armed groups, leading to displacement, fear, and a breakdown of essential services, including schools (Isa & Ugwu, 2024). According to the United Nations (2023), the right to education is fundamental, as it empowers individuals, promotes societal progress, and safeguards other human rights. However, insecurity has made it increasingly difficult for children and young adults to access quality education, contributing to a rise in illiteracy, underdevelopment, and a lack of opportunities for future generations.
In Chikun, the rise in insecurity due to attacks by bandits and other armed groups has led to the closure of many schools, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas, where most of the attacks have occurred (Yusuf, 2023). These violent activities have disrupted the education system, leaving children and young people without proper schooling. The closure of schools not only affects academic performance but also deprives children of a safe space for personal development, social interaction, and future career prospects. Furthermore, parents are often reluctant to send their children to school for fear of abductions or violent attacks on school premises. This environment of insecurity has compounded existing educational challenges in the region, including inadequate infrastructure, poor teacher quality, and limited access to learning materials. Thus, assessing how insecurity in Chikun Local Government affects the right to education is crucial in formulating policies and interventions that can safeguard children's right to education amidst ongoing security concerns.
Statement of the Problem:
The persistent insecurity in Chikun Local Government has significantly hindered access to education, particularly in areas most affected by violence. Despite efforts by the government and various educational stakeholders to promote the right to education, insecurity remains a critical obstacle. Schools in affected areas are often forced to shut down or operate at reduced capacities, leading to a loss of valuable educational opportunities. Additionally, the threat of attacks and abductions has created an atmosphere of fear among both students and educators, further exacerbating the problem. The government’s inability to adequately address the issue of insecurity has left communities vulnerable and unable to protect children’s right to education. As a result, a large number of children in Chikun Local Government are at risk of being denied the benefits of education, which could have long-lasting implications for their socio-economic mobility and overall development.
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the impact of insecurity on the availability and accessibility of education in Chikun Local Government, Kaduna State.
To assess the socio-psychological effects of insecurity on students and teachers in Chikun Local Government.
To explore the measures taken by the government and local authorities to mitigate the effects of insecurity on education in Chikun.
Research Questions:
How has insecurity in Chikun Local Government affected the availability and accessibility of education for students?
What are the socio-psychological effects of insecurity on students and teachers in Chikun Local Government?
What measures have the government and local authorities implemented to address the impact of insecurity on the education sector in Chikun?
Research Hypotheses:
Insecurity has a significant negative effect on the availability and accessibility of education in Chikun Local Government.
Insecurity has a detrimental socio-psychological effect on students and teachers in Chikun Local Government.
Government interventions have had limited success in mitigating the effects of insecurity on education in Chikun Local Government.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study will focus on the impact of insecurity on education in Chikun Local Government, specifically examining the experiences of students, parents, and educators in the region. The study will explore both primary and secondary schools, as well as community-based educational programs that have been disrupted by insecurity. The research will be limited to the perspectives of those who have been directly affected by insecurity, including students and teachers, and will exclude broader societal impacts outside of the educational sector. Additionally, the study's findings may be influenced by the availability of respondents, as some individuals may be unwilling to speak openly due to safety concerns. Access to remote or conflict-affected areas may also pose logistical challenges.
